Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics
(C-BIT)
Comprehensive Behavior Intervention for Tics (C-BIT) is an evidence-based behavioral therapy designed to help children with Tourette Syndrome and other tic disorders. C-BIT combines habit reversal training with psychoeducation to teach individuals how to manage and reduce their tics.
Studies have shown that C-BIT reduces tic severity in about 60% of children. Of those that respond well to treatment, the vast majority go on to enjoy continued relief from tics. C-BIT has been shown to be as effective as medication treatment, with no adverse side effects.
About C-BIT
-
CBIT is suitable for children and adolescents, typically ages 6-22, with Tourette Syndrome or other tic disorders. It is especially beneficial for those whose tics interfere with daily functioning, cause distress, or affect social interactions.
-
C-BIT treatment at Grounded Roots follows an evidence based treatment protocol involving the following:
Initial Assessment: Our first session will involve a comprehensive evaluation of your child’s tics severity, history, and impact. The initial session typically lasts 90 minutes.
Customized Treatment Plans: Tailored strategies to address individual needs of each family.
Habit Reversal and Competing Response Training: Techniques to identify and manage tic triggers.
Parental Involvement: Guidance and support for families to reinforce strategies at home.
Progress Monitoring: Regular follow-ups to assess progress and adjust treatment as needed.
A parent is encouraged to attend C-BIT sessions with their child in order to help facilitate generalization of C-BIT skills learned during therapy to the home setting.
-
C-BIT treatment typically consists of weekly sessions over the course of 8-10 weeks. However, the duration may vary depending on the individual’s needs and progress. Ongoing support and maintenance sessions may also be provided as needed.
-
Yes, C-BIT is a non-pharmacological intervention that has been shown to be an effective alternative or complement to medication for managing tic disorders. It is particularly beneficial for families seeking behavioral interventions over medication.
C-BIT is a behavioral therapy and does not have the side effects associated with medications. However, like any therapeutic intervention, it requires commitment and active participation from the individual and their family to achieve the best results.
-
C-BIT is the most highly researched non-medication treatment for tics and Tourette’s.
Many families that come to our clinic have already tried expensive alternative treatment modalities in the search for effective relief; unfortunately often with minimal success.
While every individual is different, C-BIT has proven highly effective in clinical trials. Better yet, clinical evidence suggests that treatment outcomes persist even after treatment is over.

Tics aren’t just what I do, it’s part of who I am!
I have lived with tics myself and am a parent to children who also experience tics and Tourette’s. This firsthand experience has deepened my understanding of the challenges and triumphs that come with these conditions, and it drives my commitment to supporting others on similar journeys. I strive to create a space where clients feel understood and empowered.

At Grounded Roots Family Development Center, we are committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based care for children and adolescents with Tourette Syndrome and other tic disorders. In this initial session, psychoeducation about the biological, psychological, and social aspects of tics is also provided to the child and their family. The first session typically lasts 80-90 minutes, and costs $375. After that, C-BIT sessions typically last 45-55 minutes and cost $225 per therapy hour. Unlike ongoing counseling or therapy which may last months, C-BIT treatment typically takes place over only 8-10 sessions to achieve treatment completion.
