Year-End Recap: School Psychology- The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

As another breathless school year winds down, let’s break down the good, the bad, and the ugly; and what we can do about it!

The Good: Now more than ever, school psychologists are increasingly in high demand. Especially in Texas, we’ve fully stepped into our identify as full-fledged School Psychologists, and made our roles known on our campuses. Increased demand for school psychology services has led to more visible involvement with schools, more students and teachers helped, and increased access of services for our students.

The Bad: Workloads seem to be increasing every year, with resources becoming more and more scarce. Limited budgets, loss of Covid funding for schools, and high teacher turnover are just a few of the stressors we are encountering.

The Ugly: The ugly truth is that the pressures and demands of the job can take a significant toll on the mental health and well-being of school psychologists. Increased scrutiny, fatigue, unrealistic expectations (that we place on ourselves and get put on us by others!), along with emotional strain are a recipe for major career burnout, sometimes even as your career is just beginning. More and more good clinicians are leaving the field altogether.

So what’s the solution here?

I don’t pretend to have all the answers. Systemic challenges, staffing shortages, and increased caseloads aren’t going to be solved overnight. What I do know, is that by navigating these challenges as a community, we are stronger, more professionally resilient, and more joyful in our work.

If you're a school psychologist looking for support, professional growth, and a community that understands your challenges, my Mastermind Groups are here for you.

I have THREE brand-new Mastermind groups, ready to support School Psychologists at every step of your career.

  1. Texas Student & Early Career School Psychologists

  2. Texas LPA & EPPP Support Mastermind

  3. Contracting School Psychologists of Texas Mastermind

Each group is 12 weeks long, and the first cohorts start in September! Groups are limited to the first 8 participants to sign up. Due to between-state variations in school psychology rules and regulations, current cohorts are for clinicians in Texas only.

Join the mailing list now for FREE, and be the first to get notified when enrollment opens this summer! Space is limited to 8 members, so spots will go quickly! Get on the mailing list now, so you can be sure to snag a spot! You can sign up here to be notified about enrollment. You can also send me an email to be added to the enrollment notification.

PLEASE NOTE: **This group is NOT designed to be a replacement for supervision, legal consultation, or therapy. Furthermore, no supervisory or clinical relationship is formed in joining this group**
